  That's a great question! I've found that some photographers do offer specialized shadow and highlight recovery techniques, often using dodging and burning in post-processing, or even HDR photography techniques during the shoot. These can dramatically improve depth because they bring out details that were either lost in the dark or blown out by bright light. Thinking about old family photos, sometimes I wish my Granny had access to these tools; so many beautiful memories trapped in photos with poor lighting! These enhancements also make the subject pop and look more three-dimensional.
